Disney Cruise Line Preview – Week of July 29

first_imgShare This!Sailing aboard one of the four Disney Cruise Line ships this week? Join us as we take a look at what you can expect on your cruise in the latest edition of Disney Cruise Line Preview for the week of July 29th. I’m Brand Glover (not to be confused with Derek Burgan) and I’ll be giving you tips and weather to help make your vacation planning easier! Last week we had some major announcements regarding the future of the Disney Cruise Line, but now it’s time to see what we have in store this week…Ports of Call (High/Low Temperature, Chance of Rain)Disney Magic, photo: Adrian RowdaDisney Magic 29 July – Villefranche (82/73, 10%)30 July – Livorno (84/69, 10%)31 July – Olbia (95/72, 0%)1 August – Day at Sea2 August – Civitavecchia (88/74, 0%)3 August – Naples (93/77, 0%)4 August – Palermo (90/77, 0%)Disney Wonder29 July – Juneau (63/51, 70%)30 July – Skagway (61/54, 20%)31 July – Tracy Arm Fjord (59/51, 50%)1 August – Day at Sea2 August – Vancouver (81/61, 0%)3 August – Day at Sea4 August – Tracy Arm Fjord (61/50, 60%)Disney Dream29 July – Nassau (91/83, 20%)30 July – Castaway Cay (90/82, 60%)31 July – Port Canaveral (87/76, 60%)1 August – Nassau (92/83, 80%)2 August – Castaway Cay (90/83, 60%)3 August – Day at Sea4 August – Port Canaveral (89/78, 60%)Disney Fantasy29 July – Port Canaveral (93/77, 20%)30 July – Day at Sea31 July – Day at Sea1 August – Tortola (85/78, 20%)2 August – St. Thomas (88/80, 50%)3 August – Day at Sea4 August – Castaway Cay (91/83, 40%)Disney Cruise Line: In The NewsCastaway Cay has been voted Top Cruise Line Private Island by the Cruise Critic’s Cruisers Choice Destination Awards. The Disney Cruise Line Blog has a post revealing some of the more notable top results, which includes Castaway Cay and other major ports visited by current Disney Cruise Line itineraries. Having visited another private cruise line island in the past, I can say that Castaway Cay stands out for its deluxe amenities, as well as volume and value of its many activities. Visiting Castaway Cay is always one of the most anticipated itinerary days for me between snorkeling and exploring the island… and have I mentioned the Serenity Bay buffet? With Disney’s level of detail and excellence in service and quality, this user rating is something I foresee being a lock for years to come.Assembling news from the Marvel Universe, Disney Parks Blog has a post previewing the new Doctor Strange show from the Disney Fantasy’s Oceaneer Club, which we mentioned briefly last week. Joining Doctor Strange is Thor, both of whom use their powers to teach the young Oceaneers skills that helped turn them into some of the greatest heroes in the Universe. Doctor Strange had a similar street show at Disney’s Hollywood Studios last year, which I was able to experience. Adding in the technology in the club to that experience, I can say that this will be something kids will enjoy experiencing.Last week we mentioned the news out of D23 that Beauty and the Beast would be debuting on the Disney Dream this November, bringing the Disney classic to the Walt Disney Theatre as a Broadway-style production. As part of the anticipation for the new show, the Disney Parks Blog has been releasing a series of behind-the-scenes articles detailing the work going into this new production. The latest post features an interview with Sarah Cubbage, the Broadway costume designer who has been tasked with creating the costumes for the new show. Between the costumes and rehearsal footage released thus far, Beauty and the Beast looks to be an extravagant production. As a fan of the live-action and animated films, I am excited to see how certain iconic scenes will be brought to the stage. Time will tell how this tale as old as time will play out, but I know it will be nothing short of impressive with the level of detail being put into each part of this production.Twitter user @Dustin2008 posted documents pertaining to the Halloween on the High Seas costume policy for the upcoming itineraries starting in September. Of note: masks may not be worn unless standing still at character photo locations and must be carried while walking around the ship. Toys or props that resemble weapons (guns, knives, or the like) may not be brought on the ship at embarkation. We will keep you updated to any similar policy changes regarding the other themed itineraries sailing this year. For those of you staying on dry land this week, we have another recipe from the Disney Fantasy’s Sweet on You. Disney Parks Blog posted a recipe for the Raspberry Macarons. The recipe produces 20 macarons and is another simple recipe that can be baked together with the entire family.Captain’s Log: Important Tips and InformationWhile Marvel fans are anxiously awaiting the next installments in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the penultimate Avengers: Infinity War, passengers aboard the Disney Magic will be able to team up with the Avengers much sooner. The all-new Marvel Day at Sea brings the iconic heroes of Marvel films out to sea for meet and greets, specially themed fireworks, costume contests, a Marvel film festival, and more! For theme park fans, some of these characters are unavailable for meet and greets in the parks, especially at Walt Disney World (unless you’re on an Island East of the Mississippi, but that’s a story best left for the Saturday Six). Spider-Man, Black Panther, and Loki will be making their debuts alongside Captain America, Thor, Iron Man, as well as Star Lord and Gamora from Guardians of the Galaxy. Being a huge fan of Marvel as well as character meets, this is reason enough for me to book one of these 7- or 8-night itineraries this fall. With the situation surrounding the theme park rights for these characters, this may be your best chance to see them all in one place.Drink of the Day OptionsFor adults, relaxing on a cruise often includes drinking a fine adult beverage, whether it’s while lounging by the pool or watching the scenery change in the sleek Skyline club. Adult beverages are available in nearly every restaurant and at other locations around each ship. Pool hosts and hostesses even walk around with drinks, so you won’t ever have to leave your chair! One of the best values for your dollar is the drink of the day. Each day, a new drink (an alcoholic and non-alcoholic version) is featured throughout the bars on the ship, and generally costs about $5. A popular drink among my traveling party was the Sunken Treasure, which was one of the more visually appealing concoctions of the daily specials. If you read the Saturday Six, you’ll know just how much we appreciate the fine art of cocktail design. That brings us to an important note about adult beverages and what you can bring aboard the ship at embarkation. Adults 21 and older can bring a maximum of two bottles of unopened wine or champagne, not exceeding 750ml, or six 12-ounce beers in their original unopened container. No other types of alcohol (including powdered forms) are permitted to be brought aboard the ship. Any extra bottles or cans will be confiscated and returned at disembarkation. Further, alcoholic beverages brought on board must be consumed in the staterooms and are not permitted in any bars or pubic areas. While lounging by the pool sounds like a fantastic way to spend a cruise, there is so much room for activities in a day and not enough time to experience them all, believe it or not! From the moment you board the ship until you lay your head down to sleep on the last night, there is always something happening on a Disney Cruise. We’ve already touched on the Broadway shows and sporting events in the past weeks, but did you know that the onboard Buena Vista Theatre shows the latest Disney film releases? My first viewings of John Carter, Thor: The Dark World, and some little film called Frozen were all on board a ship. Or what about family BINGO and trivia events. I had to do a double take when I noticed Figment’s name on the Funnel Vision screen during one such trivia game. You’ll see live musicians, dance parties, video game challenges, shopping seminars, and so much more.So with that in mind, I thought I’d mention a couple activities that I consider must-do’s on every cruise. Keep an eye on your Personal Navigator for an energetic game show called Match Your Mate, which is similar in format to TV’s The Newlywed Game. The answers are always outrageous and unpredictable, which is why this has become a tradition for me. Another high priority for me is the Aquaduck on the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy. If you’ve never experienced the Aquaduck, it’s part water coaster, and part gentle glide around the top of the ship with an amazing view. It’s such a fun ride that my niece made sure we rode it five times in a row on our last cruise. Now this last must-do takes a bit of exploring, but it is something the entire family can enjoy together. Throughout the Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, you may notice artwork that seems to come alive as you walk by. This enchanted art is actually a screen which plays video and sound effects making the image come alive, making it seem as if you’re in the middle of Pirates of the Caribbean, for example. As a huge fan of Disney animation, this is one of the most fascinating things I’ve found on the ships and is something I make sure to experience every time.Austin Powers would approve of the Disney Fantasy’s set design for Match Your MateWhat would a Disney experience be without fireworks? Being a Walt Disney World local, it’s hard to fathom a night that doesn’t have a glorious display of color bursting across the skies. One unique thing to the Disney Cruise Line is that they are the only cruise line that has a fireworks display on-board the ship. I know what you’re thinking: WHAT? HOW? WHERE?!? On most DCL sailings, each cruise has a night set aside for a specially themed deck party, of which the standard theme is Pirate Night. On Pirate Night, guests are encouraged to dress up in their best swashbuckling attire for a special pirate-themed meal and fireworks with Captain Jack Sparrow! As with any Disney fireworks show, you’ll hear the echoes of your favorite musical themes from the parks, films, and more paired with bright beams of fire lighting up the open seas. As for holidays and the newer Star Wars and Marvel Days at Sea, guests will experience special shows tailored to those themes. Hearing John Williams’s score roaring over the moonlit seas, now that is my kind of cruise!Nine Dragon, photo: Julia MascardoWhat to Try: Before we go, here’s one of our favorite cocktails from the Skyline Lounge on the Disney Dream. As the name implies, the Lounge gives spectacular views of various skylines around the world through magic “windows” showcasing the cities of Paris, New York, Chicago, Rio de Janiero and Hong Kong. The drink menu is themed around the cities, with each having its own list of drinks available. The Nine Dragon from the Hong Kong portion of the night (Takara Jun Shochu Spirit, Chambord, Cranberry and Raspberry Juice) is a bold combination of sweet flavors.Serenity Bay, photo: Adrian RowdaAre you deciding whether to book a Disney Cruise but are having a tough time deciding which ship fits all of your desires? Well, our own Laurel Stewart has put together a chart that makes it easy to compare all of the options in one place. Also available as a valuable planning and companion guide from authors Len Testa, Erin Foster, and Laurel Stewart is The Unofficial Guide to the Disney Cruise Line. The companion guide contains a complete overview of each Disney ship as well as Castaway Cay and includes valuable tips on how to save time and money during your cruise! That concludes this week’s preview of the Disney Cruise Line. Join us next Friday as we take a look at what happens in the world of Disney Cruise Line over the next week. In the meantime, check out the latest edition of The Saturday Six from author, illustrator, and masked luchador Derek Burgan. 17 Tips for Writing the Perfect Blog Post

first_imgAfter discovering none of my readers were using them, I removed the social sharing buttons on my blog posts a couple years ago. I spoke with other bloggers and discovered they removed their sharing buttons as well, for the same reason.Your mileage may vary. For my site, I think products like Buffer and Hootsuite have replaced on-page social sharing buttons.Rather than setting font size at a fixed 14 to 16 pixels, use em or rem, which are more fluid on different devices (smartphone, tablet, laptop, desktop). Is this guide useful to you? Or do you use a different process for writing and organizing your blog posts? It’s better to firmly be on the wrong side than to be wishy washy and never make a point.Text tip: font size should make the post easy to read, preferably between 14 to 16px, possibly largerBlog posts are a conversation between the author and the reader, so write conversationally. Your post should sound more like a conversation at a coffee shop, than a professor blathering uninterrupted about ancient Greek history.Feel free to start sentences with “and” or “but” to use contractions, and to address the reader in the second person. You can also attempt to lighten the mood by surprising and delighting the reader with your wit, wisdom, and charm.Include real facts, data, and examples to make the post more interesting and to really drive home your point.Sub-headlines should be used to make the post easier to scan and read.Sub-headlines should always use an

or

tag and should never use the

tag which is reserved for the title of the post. It’s good to use bullet points and numbered lists when possible to break up long blocks of textStudies have shown that online readers are intimidated by long paragraphs, so short paragraphs of two to three sentences should be used for easier reading. One sentence paragraphs can be used for emphasis, and slightly longer paragraphs can be used on occasion.Include images and screenshots throughout the post to break up text and add visual appealRemember to include enough details in your post to make it substantial and worth reading. The internet has enough “me too” content produced to spam search engines. Put some thought and enough details in your post so you do more than skate on the surface and actually produce something worth reading and sharing.Be careful about making your text width too wide. Not only do online readers not like long paragraphs, but they also don’t like text that is too wide. The Baymard Institute recommends lines with 50 to 60 characters with 75 being acceptable. Use the Golden Ratio Typography Calculator to determine the optimal line height for your text based on the text width and font height.Always include a strong conclusion to wrap up the post in a good way. Consider using a call to action to get people to take whatever next step you’d like them to take.Find an easy-to-use comment system so readers can provide feedback and join the discussion, or consider leaving off comments if you don’t have time to manage and monitor them. Sometimes the work required to monitor comments doesn’t outweigh the benefit. My ThoughtsI wanted to comment on three of the tips in the infographic:Including date of the post is important to ensure content is up-to-date. I use a post’s date as one of the factors that contributes to credibility and context for the post. Some content creators will argue their content is timeless. My thoughts are: let the reader decide. Without a date, the reader may presume the content is outdated and may not read a post.last_img read more

But if the media keeps publishing such juicy details leaked on the Internet, Sony threatens to hold the violating news agencies “responsible.”On Sunday, news organizations including The New York Times, The Hollywood Reporter and Recode, received a three page letter from Sony attorney David Boies. According to the letter, which Recode has published in full:Sony Pictures Entertainment does not consent to your possession, review, copying, dissemination, publication, uploading, downloading, or making any use of the Stolen Information, and request your cooperation in destroying the Stolen Information.Legal precedent offers little backup for Sony’s demands, Kurt Opsahl, deputy general counsel for the Electronic Frontier Foundation, told the New York Times:“It’s unfortunate that Sony got hacked, and lost control over its internal information,” Mr. Opsahl said in an email. “But the solution is not to muzzle the press.”Guardians of Peace claims to have stolen nearly 100 terabytes of Sony data in a hack which shut down the company’s movie studio computers.
